This was very quick。 Maybe the best of Jules Verne I have read。 It is more towards a blockbuster format than a exploring fiction like 20000 leagues under the sea。 I have kept 40 pages to be read in the morning and I dreamt 4 different versions of the climax, Yet the climax was more satisfying。 This will definitely be up my list of favourites and definitely wan't a movie version。 It has more action than both the journey to the centre of the earth and 20000 leagues under the sea and why not! Things I take away from this book as a writer:Descriptions should actively engage the reader in the plot。。。 And not be boring when it does so。 There is no character arc for Phileas- save his journey and marriage to Aouda。 Instead, what Jules Verne does here is he purposely makes Phileas mysterious to the reader via other people's response to him and then gives small bits of the information away as it is relevant to the plot。 We don't learn that Phileas is an able sailor until we actually see him steal and sail a boat out from under a Captain- and has the Captain shake his hand for it no less! It's all honestly very craftily done。 Passepartout isn't your average middle man either- he *does* have a very valid character arc in which Phileas gains his absolute loyalty。 But, in the end, Passepartout is a bit of a middle man。 I believe Jules may use hyperbole and the slapstick variety for humor, and it works。 The plot twist at the end is very nicely done。 。。。more

A great adventure book overall。 Not too complex and everything is there to please the reader。 The ending is really satisfactory and the moral of the story, so to speak, is awesome imo。 The plot isn't the most complex one in history but this doesn't mean the book has less qualities。 Sometimes, I find myself enjoying books that are less intricate but that make you travel with the characters。 A great adventure book overall。 Not too complex and everything is there to please the reader。 The ending is really satisfactory and the moral of the story, so to speak, is awesome imo。 The plot isn't the most complex one in history but this doesn't mean the book has less qualities。 Sometimes, I find myself enjoying books that are less intricate but that make you travel with the characters。 。。。more

A fun romp around the world。 Verne does a good job crafting a story of adventure and keeping tension high throughout the narrative。 The narrative’s protagonists travel to a variety of different countries in a variety of ways: steamers across the pacific, the American transcontinental railroad, and carriages across various cityscapes。 Perhaps the weakest part of the narrative is the characters themselves and the bank robber subplot。 Fogg himself is a nearly emotionless automaton who, multiple tim A fun romp around the world。 Verne does a good job crafting a story of adventure and keeping tension high throughout the narrative。 The narrative’s protagonists travel to a variety of different countries in a variety of ways: steamers across the pacific, the American transcontinental railroad, and carriages across various cityscapes。 Perhaps the weakest part of the narrative is the characters themselves and the bank robber subplot。 Fogg himself is a nearly emotionless automaton who, multiple times across the novel, Verne explicitly states replies or reacts without betraying any emotion whatsoever。 While not inherently a bad thing per say as Fogg maintains a strict schedule without variation, but it does tend to undermine some of the tension at times because you think “oh Fogg’s got this or he’ll buy his way out of it。” The best character by far in my opinion is the French valet Passepartout who serves as the reader’s emotional link to the narrative as well as a source of action and at times comedic relief。Overall, the novel is perhaps one of Verne’s most approachable works and a fun read to provide an escape with。 。。。more

A charming light read with a neat concept, it is little wonder that Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days remains so pleasant and popular。 As with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Verne crams so much stuff into his pages and with such enthusiasm that it is almost unseemly, and you cannot help but get swept up by it。That said, I enjoyed it in the same way I might enjoy fast food: gratifying, but I craved something meatier。 There is almost no character development or differentiation: remarkab A charming light read with a neat concept, it is little wonder that Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days remains so pleasant and popular。 As with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Verne crams so much stuff into his pages and with such enthusiasm that it is almost unseemly, and you cannot help but get swept up by it。That said, I enjoyed it in the same way I might enjoy fast food: gratifying, but I craved something meatier。 There is almost no character development or differentiation: remarkably, we are given no motivation at all for what drives our characters。 Phileas Fogg remains an enigma, and not a compelling enigma like his counterpart in Leagues, Captain Nemo。 Our mild-mannered protagonist risks complete financial ruin on a whim, throws money around from a deus ex machina wallet, and reacts completely impassively to every setback, danger or cause for elation。 Passepartout is – again, like his counterpart in Leagues, Conseil – a cartoon; showing undying devotion to Fogg (at one point, he is even described as waiting like a dog for his master) is strange at the best of times, but following him around the world after knowing him for less than a day is outright baffling。 Similarly, Inspector Fix's motivations go way beyond the call of duty, not to mention being completely implausible, whilst Aouda's undying love is completely unearned。I sound a bit killjoy at this point, but even light adventures ought to lay some groundwork。 In complete contrast to the ponderous but meaty Leagues, Around the World is all plot: we jump from one train to the next, one ship to the next, with little time to breathe or experience any of the countries our motley band of adventurers visit。 The hectic approach to content, with interesting ideas swept off the page almost as soon as they are introduced, began to disappoint me。 Some, like the return of Passepartout after the Sioux raid (pg。 246) or Aouda's entire arc, are almost juvenile in their resolution。However, this frenetic pace does lend itself well to the book – given the nature of Fogg's wager – and I tore through the book at a pace that mimicked his eighty-day deadline。 The book's problems don't seem to harm its prospects, and Around the World is almost impossible to actively dislike。 However, while I enjoy biting into them, Verne's fast food sometimes leaves me feeling a bit empty afterwards。 。。。more
